When UI Law Faculty Alumni Gather and Discuss Child Problems

The speakers explained when the best time to buy mobile phones for children.

If usually the Faculty of Law alumni association holds an activity that also has a theme about the law, but a different thing was done by the UI Law Faculty Alumni Association which organized family theme activities at the Family Gathering.

In this activity a discussion was also held with the theme “The Challenge of Parents of the ‘Now’ Age Between Gadgets / Internet Needs and Their Dependence” which presented speakers among others child and teen psychologist Vera Itibiliana Hadiwidjojo, Sampoerna Academy Principal Frida Dwiyanti, and Hiro Whardana, President Director of Passpod.com.

In the discussion there was one interesting question that was asked by a participant, namely at what age a child can be given a mobile phone? The speakers each gave their views on this question.

Vera, for example, gave an analogy when her new child can play Play Station (PS) in the third grade of elementary school. At that time playing time was limited to holidays, while her child complained because her schoolmates were allowed by their parents to play every day. “I asked, among the ones who played PS everyday, whose grade is better than you?” “He replied, “Mine’s better obviously,” Vera said, imitating her son’s answer.

Vera explained that usually a child wants to have a mobile phone because he does not want to be considered lacking in social life and proves his existence. And there too, parents must be able to provide explanations and show their children’s strengths compared to other children who have mobile phones such as academic achievement. “I gave Nokia mobile phone to my child, but only that can text and telephone, at the same time radio, even though his friends already use the iPhone 6,” she explained.

Frida Dwiyanti said parents must be firm with their children to refuse to buy a mobile phone if it is not needed. She gave an example of his own son who was also just bought a mobile phone when he entered junior high school. “We see the importance of seeking information. So everything depends on the needs,” she explained.

Then what if the child already has a mobile phone? Frida also provided input on this matter. According to her, parents are an example for their own children so that what their parents do automatically will be done by their children. For example, a parent holds a mobile phone to play, so the child will also play games from a mobile phone. Then parents use mobile phones while on family events, so their children will follow.

While Hiro said he did give his old mobile phone that was unused to his child. But he stressed that its use must still be approved by him so that children cannot freely use it.

Hiro also supervises children when using mobile phones that already have internet access. With the technological background that he has, it is not too difficult to check what pages the child is accessing. “If now he is 7 years old, I had my used cellphone which is used by my child but I said if he wanted to use it, ask first. Because I have IT background, I can see any routing, if not suitable, I will delete it from history,” he explained.

The Chairperson of the FHUI ILUNI, Ashoya Ratam, said that the Family Gathering program was a gathering place for FHUI alumni to strengthen their sense of brotherhood. In addition, this event was also one of the ILUNI FHUI work programs under Field V.

According to Ashoya, in the near future there will still be activities conducted by ILUNI FHUI such as discussions with FHUI, then there will be discussions regarding nuptial agreements both before and after such as whether the nuptial agreement can be changed and how the process of change will take place. “I hope that many FHUI ILUNI work programs can be held. We FHUI alumni must provide counseling,” she said.

Ashoya also expressed her appreciation to the organizers who held this event. According to her the organizers had worked hard so that the event could be carried out, even some of them had to stay at the closest hotel because they prepared the event until the early hours of the morning.

The Chairperson of the Alumni Gathering Division, Adi, talked about the beginning of this event. In every reunion, usually people don’t bring their family, because of that the idea was to hold a reunion with their families. “Sometimes visas are difficult to be issued if not with their wives and children,” he joked
