Leakage of user data from one of the eCommerce platform in early May 2020, seemed to add the unrest of the Indonesian people in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Because, no half-hearted, the amount of data leaked is estimated at as many as 15-91 million users. The implication of the leak is significant. Not only is the user’s personal data exposed such as user ID, e-mail, date of birth, gender and telephone number to be misused, but also allows the data to be used to determine user consumption behavior, guess behavior, hobbies, and others.
Consumers filed protests and lawsuits because the online shopping site was considered negligent in storing and protecting the confidentiality of personal data and the privacy rights of users’ accounts. Not only the application service provider, the government, more specifically the Minister of Communication and Information of the Republic of Indonesia, was also sued because it was considered as an authority that was given the authority to supervise the implementation of the electronic system had made a mistake in carrying out its authority.
Therefore the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia through the Djokosoetono Research Center held a webinar entitled “Online Shopping: The Fate of Our Personal Data in the Eyes of the Law” on Tuesday, July 14, 2020. The purpose of holding this webinar was to engage stakeholders and experts in discussions about the importance of protecting personal data and recovery of victims’ rights to leak personal data and build in-depth discussions where the results will be poured into research so that later they can produce a policy paper or an article that can be published in the Indonesian Law Review journal.
