The Dean of FHUI Presents the Law of the Sea in Australia
The Dean of Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia Prof. Melda Kamil Ariadno, SH, LL.M., Ph.D., was a guest speaker at the International Conference “2018 APOLIA-KIOST Conference Area-Based Marine Protection in the Asia-Pacific” on August 18 to 19 2018 at the State Library of New South Wales Australia.
The conference was held by the collaboration of the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS), University of Wollongong, Australia, with the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST).
In this conference, Prof. Melda Kamil Ariadno, SH, LL.M., Ph.D. who is also Chair of the FHUI’s Center for Sustainable Ocean Policy, gave a presentation on the regional practice of marine law in Southeast Asia.
In 2020 at least ten percent of the global ocean must be subject to regional-based protection, in accordance with targets agreed by the parties to the 1992 Convention on Biodiversity in 2010 (Aichi Biodiversity Targets) and reaffirmed in the Sustainable Development Goal 14.5 (agreed in 2015).
In this conference, a critical survey and comparison of state and regional practices from regional-based protection within and outside the maritime zone in the Asia Pacific region were discussed.
The purpose of this meeting is to provide a survey of regional and national practices and to identify trends, gaps, and examples of best environmental practices.
Besides being a guest speaker, Prof. Melda Kamil Ariadno, SH, LL.M., Ph.D. also went on academic visits to several FHUI partners in Australia together with Chairperson of the Internationalization Special Unit Mr. Arie Afriansyah, SH, MIL, Ph.D., Chair of the FHUI Postgraduate Program Prof. Dr. Rosa Agustina, SH, MH and Deputy Chair of the Postgraduate Program FHUI Dr. Muhammad Ramdan Andri Gunawan Wibisana, SH, LL.M.
