Opportunities and Challenges of Indonesia’s Higher Education in the Era of Disruption
Despite growing rapidly, Indonesian universities now have various opportunities and challenges in the disruption era. These opportunities and challenges are outlined by Prof. Emeritus Mayling Oey-Gardiner Ph.D. from the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Indonesia and Dr. Teguh Dartanto in Faculty Seminar February 2018 “The Era of Disruption: Opportunities & Challenges of Higher Education of Indonesia Prof. Mayling Oey-Gardiner (Academy of Indonesian Sciences) organized by the Field of Law and Community Development Studies in cooperation with Research and Publication Unit of Faculty of Law Universitas Indonesia on Wednesday, 21 February 2018 in S & T Room, FHUI, UI Depok Campus.
To anticipate the development of higher education over the next 15-30 years, along with the community we must be able to overcome challenges arising as a result of various developments in society. The main challenge comes from population growth, which also brings along equality of learning opportunities within geographical and social range. Along with that, it also simultaneously increases also the expectations of the community towards the role of universities in solving various national problems.
Meanwhile, developments in digital technology with artificial intelligence (AI) that turn data into information has made people easily and inexpensively obtain it. This change affects the working procedures of the higher education as one source of conveniences, including a change in the way of learning and teaching. In facing these challenges and changes, universities in the future need to be managed in order to be able to undertake its various roles, namely education and teaching, development, and dissemination to become a treasure of knowledge for the community and to help the community utilize its potential.
