Doctoral Promotion of Adiwarman
Adiwarman successfully defended his dissertation entitled “Carbon Trading as an Effort to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Juridical Study of Instruments, Markets, Institutions and Utilization by Indonesia” before the Academic Session of the Faculty of Law Universitas Indonesia (FHUI), led by Prof. Dr. Rosa Agustina, S.H., M.H., with members consisting of Promoter Prof. Dr. Agus Sardjono, S.H., M.H., Co-Promoter Dr. Andri Gunawan Wibisana, S.H., LL.M., and examiners Prof. Dr. Nindyo Pramono, S.H., M.Sc., Dr. R. Bambang Prabowo, S.H., MES., Dr. Jufrina Rizal, S.H., M.A., Dr. Yetty Komalasari Dewi, S.H., MLI., Dr. Indra Surya, S.H., LL.M., and Dr. Riyatno, S.H., LL.M.
The Dissertation Defense Session was held on Saturday, November 15, 2018 at the Djokosoetono FHUI Convention Center, UI Depok Campus, at 10.00 to 12.00 WIB.
In his dissertation, Adiwarman put forward the subject matter of carbon trading which is an opportunity for Indonesia to gain benefits and control mechanisms and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. For this reason, the main problem of this research is how Indonesia uses carbon trading for the sake of fulfilling commitments and as a source of income.
With this subject matter, Adiwarman conducted research by examining policies and provisions (policy and statute approach) with a comparative approach. This approach is to get an overview of the arrangements for implementing carbon trading according to international conventions and practices in several countries. This study uses primary legal materials such as the United Nations Framework Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC), Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement. The research also discussed about carbon trade policies and arrangements in the European Union, Japan, the United States, Australia, China, India, Russia, Canada, New Zealand. This research on the legal provisions of carbon trading is intended to provide an overview of legal aspects or issues that are regulated.
To answer the question of how to implement and regulate carbon trade in Indonesia, this study also uses the opinions or writings of legal experts regarding carbon trading and issues that are related or relevant. The pro and contra opinions of legal experts are intended to build a theoretical foundation regarding the implementation of carbon trading. This research is intended to obtain arguments regarding the implementation and regulation of carbon trading.
After presenting his dissertation and answering the questions raised by the board of examiners, Adiwarman was awarded the title of Doctor of Law with the honorary title Cumlaude. Dr. Adiwarman is the 257th Doctor produced by the Legal Studies Program, the Postgraduate Program of the Faculty of Law UI, and is the 11th Doctor who graduated in 2018 and the 222nd Doctor who graduated after the Postgraduate Program was held directly by the Faculty of Law, Universitas Indonesia.
