Research, Community Engagement, and Publication

Amongst the faculty members are scholars and researchers acknowledged in Indonesia and worldwide as prominent people in their fields. Universitas Indonesia Law School is acknowledged not only in scholarly publications but also in research-based teaching and its contributions to both national and international public debates and decision-making.

1. Center for Civil Law Studies
   CCLS or LKHP objective is to study and develop the civil law areas in Indonesia. It works on research areas generally on property law, contract law, and tort law. It can manages research related to insurance, maritime/private aspect of law of the sea, secured transaction, and consumers protection. One of the major research challenge faced by the researchers in CCLS or LKHP is to modernize the Indonesia’s civil law code book that has existed since hundred of years a go.
2. Center for Law, Society, and Development Studies
   CLSD mission is to study the relationship between the law and the society and the nation’s development. Several research subjects that had been conducted are gender related legal issues, domestic violence, race discrimination, and legal pluralism. CLSD also promotes the use of sociological and/or anthropological perspective on legal issues.
3. Center for Procedural Law and Justice System Studies
   CPLJS objective is to study and develop the procedural law and justice system in Indonesia, whether in civil, criminal, or administrative court. It works on research areas such as due process of law, evidence, and court independence.
4. Human Rights Center
   HRC is committed to ensuring the promotion of National as well as International Human Rights Law. Its objectives are to promote practical, legal, and other solution to various institutions regarding human rights cases and to push for the immediate realization of such rights. In realizing those objectives, the Human Rights Center seeks to promote real interaction between local community-based organization, non-governmental organizations, governmental agencies, intergovernmental agencies and the human rights system by raising awareness of human rights and paving the way for concerted efforts toward the immediate implementation of these rights.
5. Center for Law and Good Governance Studies
   CLGS objectives are to assist the government and non government institutions to understand and/or implement the new paradigm of state governance. CLGS works on research areas generally on administrative law, public policy, and state development. CLGS particularly manages researches regarding decentralization and local autonomy, law and regulation drafting, labour law, land law, public finance, public organization, city planning, administrative court and ombudsman, alternative dispute resolution, and state owned company’s governance.
6. Center for International Law Studies
   CILS objective is to study existing international legal issues, particularly those having implications for societal and national life in Indonesia. In the broadest manner, CILS wishes to play an active role in bridging the interests of the society and Indonesian nation on the one hand, with the interests of the international community on the other, so that both parties can walk side by side in harmony. CILS works on research in the area of implementation and enforcement of an international law within Indonesia, assessing the benefits of Indonesia’s participation in international legal regulations, and drafting an international legal product. CILS publishes an international law journal.
7. Center for Constitutional Law Studies
   CCLS or PSHTN works on research areas generally on constitutional law. The topics that can be researched are general election, the role of the parliament, the role of the presidency, relationship among state bodies, analysis of constitutional court’s decision, and the development of modern constitutional law.
8. Center for Law and Technology Studies
   CLTS objectives is to study the interaction of new technologies and the law. CLTS works on research areas generally in information and communication law, intellectual property right law, and law related to research and technology. Typical research projects that have been completed are law and regulation drafting on information and communication areas, comparative study of laws of Indonesia and other countries, survey on particular legal subject, and case analysis. CLTS also manages a clinical program which functions like a technology transfer office. Everyone who wishes to register and/or license their patent, trademark, and other intellectual properties can come to this office to get assisted.
9. Center for Natural Resources Law Studies
   CNRL objective is to study the use of law with regard to Indonesia’s natural resources, so that that law may bring the maximum benefit for Indonesian people. It works on research areas generally on fossil based and renewable energy, mining, forest, water, fishery, agriculture, and tourism. The example of research subjects that can be manage by CNRL are cost recovery, production sharing contract, exploration and exploitation policy and contract, management of unoccupied island, management of water, issues of laws relating to solar, wind, and other renewable energy, and others.
10. Tax Law Center
    TLC missions are to disseminate the knowledge of tax law and conducting research on tax law areas. TLC works on research areas related to income tax, value added tax, luxury goods tax, land and building acquisition tax, local tax and retribution, taxation activities, land and building tax, and tax reform. TLC has worked with parties such as tax court judge and administrator, tax officer, tax consultant, and public accountant in completing their projects. TLC believes that its research characteristic requires collaboration with non law discipline. Therefore, TLC works closely with several researchers from the Departement of Tax Studies of the Faculty of Social and Political Science of Universitas Indonesia.
11. Center for Law and Economics
    CLES has been active in many research activities. It has produced academic drafts of laws in the area of economic law. It has also been consulted frequently on law reforms in Indonesia. CLES has the following main activities research on various economic law issues, such as consumer protection, antimonopoly, intellectual property rights and international trade, producing academic drafts of certain laws and regulations, and consulting in the area of economic law. CLES also have had research collaboration with foreign research institutions, such as Institute of Developing Economies-Japan External Trade Organizations, University of Washington, University of South Carolina, and the Gesellschaft fuer teknische Zusammenarbeit.
12. Center for Trade Competition and Policy Studies
    CTCP objective is to participate in creating a healthy business competition environment in Indonesia. Since its birth, CTCP or LKPU has involved researchers from non faculty of law, especially from faculty of economics. This is due to consideration that many norms in the Indonesian anti monopoly law are drafted using the rule of reason’s approach. It works on research areas such as monopoly, cartel, dominant position, and unfair trade practices. Parties that have been collaborated not only the government agencies, but also come from private entities.
13. Center for Islam and Islamic Law Studies
    CIIL objectives are to spread the Islamic and Islamic law thoughts to face the era of globalization, to enhance the quality of the teachings of Islam and Islamic law in the university, and to help solving the problems related to Islam and Islamic law to any stakeholders. CIIL works on research areas related to Islamic Law in Indonesia and South East Asia. CIIL provides consultation for anyone and also regularly publishes publication related to Islam and Islamic Law.
14. Indonesian Court Monitoring Society
    ICMS or MAPPI has a vision to develop the supremacy of law, because they believe that it is the main pillar of democratization. Its missions are to build an ideal justice system in Indonesia, to function as an external watching tool for law enforcer, to rebuild the society’s trust for a clean and respectable justice system, and to actively participate in developing the legal culture in Indonesian society. ICMS or MAPPI works on research areas such as corruption eradication, penitentiary institution, and reform on state attorney, police, and courts. It conducted court monitoring and case examination, and also has published several books and a regular popular law journal titled Teropong.
